Due to COVID limitations, the Golden Knights did not compete in the USCSA last season, but were able to compete in all affiliations, qualifying for the NCAA National Championships with a solid effort at the Vermont EISA Carnival. end of February. Although several of the skiers who competed at the NCAA National Championships have graduated, the third-year head coach Torin Liberty and assistant Ben Buck hope the experience translates into another great season in the USCSA this year.

Clarkson’s teams topped the USCSA National Championship rankings eight times, with the Knights’ women winning five times (2019, 2017, 2016, 2012, 2000) and the men taking first place three times (2012, 2004 and 2003) . In 2020, the Knights’ men were fourth out of 10 teams and the women were fifth out of seven teams at the USCSA Short National Championships in Lake Placid, NY.

The Clarkson women will certainly have a different look this year as several skiers compete for the first time at the college level, as many come from the cross-country ski team. Only three of the eight women have skied in college, led by seniors Melissa Brown, who finished 22nd overall at the 2020 USCSA Nationals, taking 19th in the freestyle, 21st in the sprint and 22nd in the recurve race. Brown missed a chance to make the NCAA Nationals a year ago, but junior Ava schieffert and second Lillian magnus made the trip, Schieffert finishing 38th at a time and Magnus 39th in the two-day race.

Two of the three men who competed at the NCAA National Championships a year ago have graduated, but the Golden Knights still have a lot of depth. Simon zehr finished 13th of 24 at EISA Vermont Carnival to qualify for the NCAAs, but was unavailable to compete. Him, with his senior colleagues Cameron Bancroft, have shown consistency in their results over the years and should continue to lead the team. Junior Conner roberts placed 36th in the classic 10K and 37th in the 20K freestyle at the NCAA Nationals, while also taking 14th place out of 24 skiers at the EISA Vermont Carnival a year ago. He also stood out at the 2020 USCSA National Championships by finishing in the first half of the first year competitors.
