Preamble

Hello everyone, and welcome to our opening day coverage of the Fifth Ashes Test. Weather permitting, and rarely permitting in this part of Australia, the game kicks off in Hobart at 3 p.m. local time – i.e. 4 a.m. in the UK.

“We are preparing here for the biggest sporting event Tasmania has ever seen,” the Minister of State for Recreation and Sports said earlier this week. And indeed, there is something to be excited about about Apple Isle. This is the first test match in the state in five years. This is the very first Ashes Test in Tasmania. And this is Hobart’s first day / night test. The ball is pink. The ground is greener than Bob Brown. The heavens are capricious. There is something to hope for.

The rest of the country, it must be said, has other concerns. Covid is rampant, supply chains are collapsing, the federal government is procrastinating and the national mood is grim. Novak Djokovic’s smiling mug makes the news every night. A test cricket match, despite the dead rubber, is a welcome distraction from it all.

A bruised and bruised England team are looking to win their first test in Australia since 2010-11. The fourth test was a real doozy and visitors will be looking to do better and recover something from what has been a disastrous month and a bit. Australia’s record in the home tests with the pink ball is extraordinary – nine tests, nine wins. Bookmakers have them as prohibitive favorites. For the rest of us, something like the last day in Sydney would do.
