Detroit Lions and New York Jets selected as senior Bowl coaches

The Detroit Lions and New York Jets coaches were selected by the NFL on Tuesday as coaches for the 73rd Reese’s Senior Bowl next month in Mobile, Alabama.

For the first time in the history of the College All-Star Game, head coaches will play an advisory role. Lions head coach Dan Campbell and Jets head coach Robert Saleh will produce their team assistants in leadership roles for game week. The change is being made to provide development opportunities for assistants and as a way to present these coaches in front of other NFL teams.

Also this year, four historically black college and university coaches will be on the coaching staff to connect HBCU coaches with NFL teams in the hopes that this leads to future opportunities.

“The teams of Dan Campbell and Robert Saleh will bring great intensity to our week of play and our players will undoubtedly improve during their time in Mobile. Our management is committed to using our game’s unique platform to inspire change and we are excited about the opportunities the new recruiting model will create, ”Senior Bowl Executive Director Jim Nagy said in a statement.

The Lions and Jets are both set to choose twice in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft. This will be the first time that a Jets staff coach at a Senior Bowl since 1979, when Walt Michaels was the head coach and New York selected half of the “New York Sack Exchange” from the defensive linemen Marty.
