Kuala Lumpur, January 13, 2020 (WAM) – The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has announced the change in the dates of the 2022 AFC Champions League matches, after taking into account complications resulting from the spread of the mutant Omicron of the Covid-19 virus, and the associated risks, as well as the exceptional circumstances surrounding the schedule of football matches before and after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Travel procedures in Asia have become more difficult due to new travel restrictions and protocols adopted by many countries, in order to limit the spread of the mutant Omicron.
In addition, Asian teams supposed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar are expected to develop intensive preparation programs for the competition, and that is why the Asian Football Confederation has felt the need to facilitate the preparation of teams for these circumstances.
The statement released today confirmed that in view of the above, the AFC Competitions Committee today approved the modification of the dates of the most important tournament on the Asian continent at club level.
The Asian Football Confederation will continue to work with pool matches, with redistribution of match dates throughout this year and into 2023 to ensure the successful staging of the AFC Champions League.
According to the new dates, West Asian clubs will compete in the group system according to the following dates: – Final classification round: February 3 and 4, 2023 / knockout match One stage in a pool / – Quarter-finals: February 7, 2023 / one-stage eliminatory match will take place in a pool / – Semi-final: February 10, 2023 / a one-stage elimination match will be organized by the group system /.
On the other hand, the East Asian clubs compete in the group system according to the following dates: the final prize round: August 18 and 19, 2022 / a one-stage elimination match will take place in a group / – Quarter-finals: August 22, 2022 / a one-stage elimination match will take place in a pool / – Semi-final: August 25, 2022 / one-stage elimination match that will take place in the group system / The Champions League final of the AFC will take place at home and away on February 19-26, 2023, where the first leg will take place in the West region, while the second leg will take place in the East region.
The nominations door to host matches will be open soon, and it should be noted that all decisions of the working committees must be approved by the AFC executive board to take effect.
