Han Hyo Joo Talks Filling Son Ye Jin’s Shoes In “The Pirates” Sequel, Working With Kang Ha Neul, And More

Han Hyo Joo recently did an interview with News1 about his upcoming movie “The Pirates: Goblin Flag”!

A sequel to the 2014 film “The Pirates,” “The Pirates: Goblin Flag” is a period action-adventure comedy about a group of gold diggers who set out on the high seas in search of lost treasure. The film stars Kang Ha Neul, Han Hyo Joo, Lee Kwang Soo, EXO’s Sehun, Chae Soo Bin, and Kwon Sang Woo.

Han Hyo Joo plays Hae Rang, a tough pirate captain and shipowner with a keen sense of judgment, strong charisma, and a warm heart that cares for his crew. In order to pull off the action scenes, the actress did stunt training three times a week for three months.

“I really wanted to play the role well,” she said. “I wanted people to feel like a stunt actress wasn’t clumsy but refreshing and well done. I got really ambitious about it. I asked to start stunt training early because I really wanted to do it well. I did it for about three months. I worked hard on the basics so my body could absorb it, and it looked like the wire stunts would also come in handy for a movie about pirates, so I did separate training on that. I also did training in the water. I did so many different types of training that it took a long time.

The first film “The Pirates” starred Son Ye Jin, and the interviewer asked Han Hyo Joo about the potential comparisons between the two actresses. She replied, “The first movie received so much love, and Yeo Wol’s character was so appealing. I think it’s a great honor to be asked to star in the follow-up film. It would be a lie to say that I didn’t feel the pressure of the success of the first film. I realized that I had to work hard on the character so that he didn’t become a liability. It’s an honor to follow in the footsteps of a senior actress that I love and admire.

Han Hyo Joo added, “The story is completely different. It’s not a direct sequel to the first movie, but a new independent story. Even if you haven’t seen the first movie, you can enjoy our movie. for the first time like it’s a completely different movie. Instead of the main actors standing out, I think the movie really comes to life with all of the characters. Even the penguins! It’s a film that is funnier for the chemistry between the cast members.

The actress continued to praise her co-stars and the general chemistry of the cast. “I’m so grateful to have met this team,” she shared. “I feel like I’m really lucky. I enjoyed the process where many cast and crew members came together on this valuable project and poured their passion into it. The cast gets along so well that when we first met in a long time to start promoting the film, it didn’t feel like we were working, but rather having fun. It’s like taking an excursion every day.

Han Hyo Joo joked that the best chemistry was between Lee Kwang Soo and the penguin, but she added more seriously, “Kang Ha Neul and Kwon Sang Woo also have really good chemistry. important part of the movie. Because they were the base, the rest of us felt a sense of stability. Kwon Sang Woo said it was his first recurring project, but he really made his presence felt.

About Kang Ha Neul, she continued, “I really wish he complained more. No matter how many tough action scenes he had to do, he didn’t wear guards. I was worried about him and told him to put them on, but he was like, “It’s okay. I don’t know if he felt they were confined, but he has a style of throwing his whole body into something. He doesn’t hold back, says everything is fine, and never lets on that he’s tired or struggling. He probably struggled the most in the underwater scenes. He had to swallow water with each take, but he never complained of a headache. It was almost enough to make me angry. None of the actors ever complained about being tired, but they encouraged and supported each other. But I was often worried about them because we all threw our bodies into the scene without restraint.

Han Hyo Joo also talked a bit about how his life has changed during the pandemic. “Everything changed very suddenly, very quickly,” she said. “These moments were very confusing, but everyone feels like that. I am grateful that as an actor I was able to continue working despite these difficult times. I am grateful that I was able to continuously work on projects without having to stop. After COVID-19, I shot this movie as well as the drama “Happiness”, which is finished. I’m also working on a new drama called “Moving”. I believe it’s true that a lot of people in the film industry are struggling right now. That’s why I think this film is particularly significant. I really hope that this can become a chance for Korean cinema to wake up and breathe again despite the closure of cinemas. If we can just hold on a little longer, better days will come, so hopefully that can be a source of strength.
