Nurse Fired After Posting Photo of Baby With Birth Defect

October 5, 2021

The neonatal intensive care nurse at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami has been terminated after she posted two photos of a baby born with birth defects on social media.

The hospital said Sierra Samuels violated the patient’s privacy by posting photos to her Instagram account, according to Insider.

One of the photos had the caption: “My night was great then boom!” It included a photo of the baby in the neonatal intensive care unit, Insider said, citing WFOR.

The second comment read: “Your gut is ‘supposed to be inside the baby not outside'” and had the hashtag #gastroschisis.

Gastric fissure occurs when a baby is born with an opening near the navel, its intestines and sometimes other organs outside the body ending.

Insider said Samuels could not be reached for comment.

The hospital provided this statement to WFOR: “Employees who violate these privacy rules, despite their education, are subject to disciplinary action including suspension or termination. As soon as we become aware of this potential violation, we immediately place this employee on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.”
