Sunderland 1-3 Lincoln City – BBC Sport

Chris Maguire and Lee Johnson
Chris Maguire wasted no time in telling Lee Johnson what he thought of him after being freed by the Sunderland boss last summer

Chris Maguire had a memorable comeback at the Stadium of Light as his hat-trick saw Lincoln beat Sunderland 3-1-10.

Maguire was released by Sunderland boss Lee Johnson last summer and the Scotland striker celebrated the first of his three goals in front of his former boss, who was later sent to the stands for his involvement in a scuffle at the edge of the field.

Maguire himself may have been sent off after just 10 minutes when booked for a slot at Carl Winchester, but he made the most of his release by opening the scoring after 31 minutes.

Hakeeb Adelakun’s shot was blocked by Tom Flanagan, but the ball bounced off Maguire, who unleashed a half volley led past Anthony Patterson’s right hand before heading for the dugouts to taunt Johnson.

Maguire added a second goal in the 57th minute, coming home from the penalty spot after Winchester put him in the box. As the last defenseman, Winchester received a red card for professional misconduct.

Despite only 10 men left, Sunderland offered themselves a lifeline when Ross Stewart stabbed the rebound in the 68th minute after his penalty was saved by Josh Griffiths.

However, Maguire had the last laugh by scoring his hat-trick with 15 minutes remaining. Running on a long ball in the right of the box, the attacker raised a brilliant chip on the advance of Patterson.

Sunderland head coach Johnson ended the game in the stands, after receiving a red card after a scrum involving a number of players on the sideline.
